2022: #15 St. Peter’s vs #2 Kentucky (85-79 OT First Round)
The Peacocks earned an automatic bid to the tournament by winning their conference (MAAC) championship led by head coach Shaheen Holloway. The 15-seeded St. Peter’s kept up with powerhouse #2 Kentucky in a game that had 16 ties and 13 lead changes. Clutch shooting by Holloway’s squad kept it close. St. Peter’s finished the game 18 of 21 (86%) from the free throw line and 9 of 17 (53%) from behind the arch. After handing the Wildcats their first opening-round loss under coach John Calipari, the Peacocks would go on to beat #7 Murray State in the Second Round (70-60) and #3 Purdue in the Sweet Sixteen (67-64). Although their Cinderella run would end against eventual runner-up #2 North Carolina, St. Peter’s would make tournament history by becoming the first #15 seed to advance to the Elite Eight.
